What Are Steroids?
The National Drug Intelligence Center defines steroids as “Steroids, the popular name for synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones, promote muscle growth and the development of male sexual characteristics. Steroids are legally available only with a prescription. They are prescribed to treat conditions such as delayed puberty, some types of impotence, and body-wasting in patients suffering from AIDS (Justice.gov).” There are two different kinds of steroids. The two different kinds are Anabolic and Corticosteroids. Both steroids are used for different purposes, and treat different illnesses.
Anabolic Steroids are a synthetic substance that resembles male sex hormones which are called “androgens.” They also promote the growth of skeletal muscle growth known as the “anabolic effect,” and promote the development of male sexual characteristics know as “androgenic effects.”
